I didn’t realize it was still 1960

So, I already mentioned I’m pretty upset about stupid Prop 8 in Cali going through. I’d love to see someone put up a proposition to ban hetero marriage. No… that’d be preposterous, right?

Seriously, who’s to say that one union is legit simply b/c of the party’s pieces/parts?

“But what about the children?”

Really? So, it’s totally cool if Alex gets a sex change oppo, becomes Alexis, & marries a dude? Trust ppl, you’ll have a much harder time explaining that to your 5-yr old. & the kids don’t care. Every kid I’ve ever met totally understands, if 2 ppl love each other, they get married. They’re so idealistic, they don’t even know about the probs/conflicts a couple face.

It more acceptable to marry you cousin than for a same-sex marriage to take place. Uh…. that’s right ppl, I said marry your cousin. Seriously, though, it’s legal to marry your cousin in 26 states. There’s even a loophole in Vermont’s state government that allows DOGS to marry!

You know how we look back 100 or 200 years & say that it seems unreal that certain civil liberties didn’t exist then (like voting for some ppl)? I can’t help but be embarrassed for what our descendants are going to think of us deny civil liberties in 2008!

On June 2nd, 1958, Richard Loving & Mildred Jeter were married. 5 weeks later, they were arrested & then sentenced to a year in jail. Wanna know why? B/c interracial marriages were prohibited. Of course they appealed it. This idocity went on for 9 years before the US Supreme Court unanimously overturned it.

“… The freedom to marry has long been recognized as one of the vital personal rights essential to the orderly pursuit of happiness by free men. Marriage is one of the “basic civil rights of man,” fundamental to our very existence and survival … Under our Constitution, the freedom to marry, or not marry, a person of another race resides with the individual and cannot be infringed by the State.”

– Chief Justice Earl Warren, June 12, 1967

How is Prop 8 in Cali (or 102 in Arizona, or 2 in Florida) even really an issue that we are debating today? Hello, 2008, it’s 1960 on the phone for you.

In Arkansas, an LGBT person can’t even adopt a child. I’ve counted 17 states (you can double-check it, I got a headache counting) that don’t even recognize same-sex civil unions!!!

I’m not going to go on any further. B/c I’ll just blow a gasket. (Does anyone say that anymore? No? Just me? Whatev.)

So, I’ll leave y’all w/ a comment I once left to someone else’s comment saying that why can’t “they” just be happy w/ “civil unions”. You know why?

Cause there was never a top-ten hit that went,

♪♫♪♪ Goin to the Chapel, & we’re gonna get Civil-Unioned ♫♪♪”….

It’s still not the same thing. It would be the equivalent of telling “certain ppl” that they can ride on the same bus to the same destination, but they have to sit at the back of the bus.

You might argue: Why would they care? They still get to the same place.

B/c it’s saying that they’re different/lesser, & don’t deserve the idealism that “regular ppl” do.

The reason “regular” is in quotes is b/c I don’t believe that being straight is a “regular” trait. Maybe it’s a dominant trait (like having brown eyes, versus the recessive having blue eyes.). But that 2nd link shows that homosexuality has been around for eons, & they’ve even proven it exists naturally in animals.

Want to do something about it? Try:

autobots are special needs devices

I’m preparing for my flight to Chicago tomorrow morn.  I figured I’d check the TSA guidelines so that my precious (expensive) toiletries don’t get poached from me.

So, I go to the TSA regulations site.  It’s really cute, it’s called “TSA:  What to Know Before You Go”.  See?  Cute!  It rhymes.

This is when I discovered that my 4 oz “travel-sized” hair gel is not allowed, the container must be 3 oz or less. Criggity.

Then I just scroll down to see what other useful info they have. And I see the heading:

Makeup, Medication, Personal Items & Special Needs Devices

And listed under that is your usual (in alpha order):

  • Aerosol spray bottles and cans
  • All creams and lotions
  • Bug and mosquito sprays and repellents
  • Deodorants
  • Eyelash Curlers
  • Hair styling gels and spray
  • Liquid foundations
  • Liquid mascara
  • Shampoos and conditioners
  • Toothpaste

….. and then I see this, just under toothpaste….

  • Toy Transformer Robots

um…. what? I know that toy Transformer robots aren’t makeup or medication. So they must qualify as a special needs device? They’re above tweezers & walking canes. Seriously, you can click on that link above to go to the TSA regulations website & see it for yourself if you don’t believe me.  I’ll even put up a screenshot in case they change it:

pls everyone, help good triumph!

Hey everyone,

I feel sick to my stomach. I opened up my email today & saw that Troy Davis’s execution has been scheduled for Tues evening @ 7 pm!! Please go to Amnesty International’s site & click on the link to sign the letter to Georgia’s Board of Pardon & Parole.

I can’t believe we are about to execute (EXECUTE!) a man that may be innocent. There has been SO MUCH doubt in his trial. I’ve posted about him since June of 2007, & I thought for sure the court would be fair. But alas….

Let’s go over the facts:

  • There was no physical evidence against Troy Davis.
  • The weapon used was never found.
  • The case against him consisted entirely of witness testimony.
  • All but two of the state’s non-police witnesses have recanted or contradicted their testimony.
  • Many of these witnesses have stated that they were pressured or coerced by the police.
  • One of the witnesses who has not recanted is Sylvester Coles, the principle alternative suspect.
  • Nine individuals have signed affadavits implicating Sylvester Coles.
  • Troy Davis has never had a hearing in federal court on the reliability of the witness testimony used against him.

Ok, so remember the ppl who recanted their stories? Well, Abolish the Death Penalty has what they specifically said about it:

Darrell Collins:[The police] were telling me that I was an accessory to murder and that I would … go to jail for a long time and I would be lucky if I ever got out, especially because a police officer got killed…I was only sixteen and was so scared of going to jail.

Antoine Williams:After the officers talked to me, they gave me a statement and told me to sign it. I signed it. I did not read it because I cannot read … I was totally unsure whether he was the person who shot the officer. I felt pressured to point at him … I have no idea what the person who shot the officer looks like.

Jeffrey Sapp:The police came and talked to me and put a lot of pressure on me…. They wanted me to tell them that Troy confessed to me about killing that officer. The thing is, Troy never told me anything about it. I got tired of them harassing me …. I told them that Troy did it, but it wasn’t true.

Daniel Kinsman:[T]here was and is no doubt in my mind that the person who shot the officer had the gun in and was shooting with his left hand.” Davis is right-handed.

Shirley Riley:People on the streets were talking about Sylvester Coles being involved with killing the police officer, so one day I asked him if he was involved …. Sylvester told me he did shoot the officer.

Joseph Washington:I am positive that it was Red [Coles] who shot the police officer… [He] was wearing a white shirt…I had no idea that the shirt…was important because no one ever asked me…I would have testified to this but I was not asked by the state or by Troy’s lawyers.

Please, everyone, click on the pic below to go to Amnesty International’s site & read about him. I’d love for all of you to sign the letter for him, but I’d be happy if you just read about him & share it w/ someone (ANYone) else.

The letters need to be faxed, & I know from experience that sometimes these ppl turn off their fax machines when all these faxes start comin in. In that case, you can click HERE to go to the contact information page for the GA State Board of Pardons & Parole. You can email the Pardon Administration Unit for Restoration of Rights or Pardons at Pardon_Administration@pap.state.ga.us and/or Clemency_Information@pap.state.ga.us.

You can also click to sign a petition.

it’s all about the loopholes, baby.

You know how sometimes you pay a diff price for gas depending on if you pay in cash or use yo plastic?

So, I just found out that Visa and MasterCard explicitly prohibit merchants from charging consumers extra for paying with a credit card. (American Express & Discover don’t.)

But all the cards do allow the station to offer a discount for using cash.

So, all they need to do is increase their regular price & give the discount to the ppl who carry green. Sneaky.

I know a lot of ppl have been coming here for the tax tips.

You can either scroll down to where it is, or find the original complaint & the solution at the links given.

more gas

I’m sure most of y’all have seen this by now. But the pic is of the Speaker of the House, Dennis Hastert (R- IL).

There was a press conference held at a gas station in DC yesterday. Afterward, all the members of Congress that attended drove off (by “drove off”, I mean that they were driven off by hired drivers, of course). They all left in Hydogen-powered cars. But they were only driven a little way off to where their real cars were. By “cars”, I mean super-dee-duper-gas-guzzlin SUVs. Then, they drove the few blocks that were left to get back to Capitol Hill.

We sure know how to pick our leaders in this country, huh?

You can read USA Today’s commentary on it here.

The reason this bothers me so much is b/c these ppl only care about appearances. They couldn’t care less about what’s really going on in the US right now. Big Oil — Price (prize) gouging. All that matters to them is how they look. They’re just posers.

Which shouldn’t be such a big deal. But I guess it really bothers me that they think we’re all buying into what they’re showing us. And I guess a lot of Americans are; or else why would these big-business tycoons be in office now? I just wish there was something more. I wish they really understood what was happening & really cared enough to do something real about it. Not just put on a show like we’re at the $5 matinee & then go back to how they were an hour & twenty mins later. I guess I’m just a little frustrated that I just spent $40 to put gas in the car 3 days ago, & it’s on empty now.

.t05 solution

OK, I’ve been getting a TON of emails asking how to fix the problem w/ the TaxCut software. The prob being that some ppl can’t print it, & want to save it to a pdf file. B/c it’s in it’s own file format (called T05) w/ that extension at the end of it.

In TurboTax, you could just hit “file”, “save as…”, & change the type to a pdf easily.

Well, here’s how to do it w/ TaxCut:
1–I went to download.com, & typed in a search for a “pdf writer”.
I had one previously installed that also required a download of a “ghostwriter” program. But it somehow got deleted. So, I just went back & discovered a new one. It’s only 2 mb in size & downloads super-fast. It’s called cutePDF writer 2.5. Now, I don’t know if you need a ghostwriter program for this one. Since I already had it on my computer, it may have just ran in the background like w/ my previous pdf writer program. But for some reason, I don’t think you need to download anything else for this one.
2–So, download this CutePDF Writer 2.5, & install it onto your computer. It’s a free download.
3–Now, to use it, all you do is goto “File” & “Print”. Once on the ‘print’ screen, go to “Find Printer” & select the pdf writer as your printer output.

I literally no longer have a printer on our computer (gave it to my sister). So, now if I want to print something at home, I always have to save it as a pdf file, then use another printer (like my work one, or you can use your public library’s computer). If you are in the same situation, then simply go to your “Start” button, select ‘Settings’ & ‘Printers & Faxes’. You’ll see your new CutePDF writer in there. Just right-click it, & select the ‘set as default printer’ option. It will get a check mark next to it now. And from here on out, whenever you hit the ‘print’ button or icon, it’ll automatically convert whatever you’re working on (office doc, or this .t05 file) to a pdf format. Then, you can save it to a disk, or email it to yourself. My dad wanted to email his 1040 completed taxes to my sister who’s in college so that she can use it to do her FAFSA for her school’s financial aid. Important docs like that you always want to send as a pdf so that no one can make any changes to it, & the doc’s integrity remains intact.

Original Post on this whole TaxCut drama. Who knew it was so universal though?!

UPDATE (7/5/2006): The CutePDF Writer 2.5 that I had downloaded & used is no longer available for download. But I did find that they have a new CutePDF Writer 2.6 available for download now. It may even be better/easier/faster/who knows! Also, don’t forget to read the license & user/editor’s reviews before downloading stuff!

Vaughn, dead or alive?

OK, so an anon posted a comment that began w/:

if you haven’t noticed…jj abrams is going mad! i SAW vaughn die!!!

I started posting a comment in reply, but it ended up being super-long, so I’m just posting it here instead.

anon- Yeah, I saw Vaughn die too. But, you have to remember:
-that they have the whole cloning thing. Plus, Vaughn was a double-agent, & maybe it wasn’t really the real Vaughn that they shot 18 times.
-Plus, how does someone get shot that much, & still kinda “make it” enough to go to the hospital, not die right there on the spot. Here’s my thought on that: they extracted him after the car crash, afterwhich, they unleashed “clone Vaughn”, & he was the one they eventually killed.
-Or, the whole death was a hoax, so that they could have Vaughn not tell Syd the truth. Like, they could’ve injected something to make him “fake” die, but really come back to life after they extracted him from the hospital. Then, they kept him so that he couldn’t say anything.

Also, I think Michael Vaughn’s father, Bill Vaughn is still alive & working to take down “Prophet 5” which I think is still alive & kicking. I think it may even be bigger (“parent” company, if you will) of the Alliance. Or, maybe Bill Vaughn knew that his son’s life was in danger, so he injected him w/ the “fake death serum” so that he could save him. Maybe let him into his life now that he does know about Prophet-5.

This final theory does work for me b/c JJ Abrams loves to have historically fictional stories. I mean, 1st he has Rambaldi artifacts that really do exist, & he really did predict a lot of stuff. Then, character names like Renée Rousseau, or John Locke. And all the historical literature. So, he may have taken the fake death serum from Shakespeare’s “Romes & Jules”. Maybe that’s a stretch, but I don’t think so.

Also, I think both father & son Vaughns are still alive cause we thought that Iryna Derevko was dead (twice), & she’s most def is NOT!

gay marriage is wrong. Right?

‘Kay, so I got this email from one of my bestest friends; & at the bottom, she said to pass the email along to others. BUT, she sent the email to about 100 ppl, & all the ppl I know were in there. So, I’m just posting it here instead. Feel free to copy it & email it to all the ppl you know though. Haha, know though. That rhymes. haha.

top 10 reasons why gay marriage is wrong:

1) Being gay is not natural. Real Americans always reject unnatural things like eyeglasses, polyester, and air conditioning.

2) Gay marriage will encourage people to be gay, in the same way that hanging around tall people will make you tall.

3) Legalizing gay marriage will open the door to all kinds of crazy behavior. People may even wish to marry their pets because a dog has legal standing and can sign a marriage contract.

4) Straight marriage has been around a long time and hasn’t changed at all; women are still property, blacks still can’t marry whites, and divorce is still illegal.

5) Straight marriage will be less meaningful if gay marriage were allowed; the sanctity of Brittany Spears’ 55-hour just-for-fun marriage would be destroyed.

6) Straight marriages are valid because they produce children. Gay couples, infertile couples, and old people shouldn’t be allowed to marry because our orphanages aren’t full yet, and the world needs more children.

7) Obviously gay parents will raise gay children, since straight parents only raise straight children.

8 ) Gay marriage is not supported by religion. In a theocracy like ours, the values of one religion are imposed on the entire country. That’s why we have only one religion in America.

9) Children can never succeed without a male and a female role model at home. That’s why we as a society expressly forbid single parents to raise children.

10) Gay marriage will change the foundation of society; we could never adapt to new social norms. Just like we haven’t adapted to cars, the service-sector economy, or longer life spans.

note at the bottom of the email (so I’m posting it here instead):
PASS THIS AROUND IF YOU ARE FOR GAY MARRIAGE (i’m not trying to guilt you into posting this again, but i think it’s great and it’d be cool if it got around).

mo money. . .

. . . mo probs.

Yep, that’s right. The House (of Reps) ratified the Deficit Reduction Act. This is another example of things that just don’t make sense to me. Here’s the deal:

They want to cut $39.5 billion through 2010 from the federal budget; thus saving taxpayers almost $40 billion.

That sounds all kosher and all. It seems to be great for most ppl, the average taxpayer will save about $300 (I’m not clear if this amount is per year, or over the next 5 years; but prob over the next 5). I’m sure most of the ppl who read my blog have student loans though. For kids currently in college, it opens up some options & increases the amount of moolah they (& their fam) can borrow. It’s going to cut about $12.7 billion from student loans, but will allow kids to borrow more money. Don’t ask me how that works, it all seems very contradictory to me.

But for those of us paying on loans cause we’re all done w/ our educatin, & we’re now trying to be productive, contributing members of society; we’ll have to pay more in interest.

Starting in July, parents who have the PLUS loan will have an interest hike from 6.1% to 8.5%. That’s about 800,000 parents across the US. A lot of these parents are single-parents w/ only one income trying to help their (multiple) kids through school.

And for the nearly 10 million kids (TEN MILLION ppl!!) out there who have a Stafford Loan, your interest is gonna go up to 6.9% (from the current 5.3%). I know that for those of you making payments, you already know that 5.3% is already a hike from what it was.

It’s supposed to be a good thing: lower loan fees & higher loan limits. But it seems to be a temporary good thing. Cause in the long run, they’re killin us in the interest. That’s just my take on it all, though. And I’m not pretending to understand a lot of it.
