heads of state

I’d written about Mahmoud Ahmadinejad before. He had said then that he wouldn’t do Oli Stone’s doc b/c he wants nothing to do w/ the US b/c anything to do w/ the US relates to “the Great Satan”.

Sooooo…. um, isn’t Columbia University in the US? So, why’d he do that? You know what I really wanna know that I can’t seem find out? How much did they pay him to appear & speak?

You know what I mean? Seriously, even if you wanted Carrot Top to come to your school to speak, you’d have to pay him, & put him up in swanky digs & stuff. So, how much? And the students are ok w/ having contributed to his income?

Y’all remember the tasering that happened at John Kerry’s todo at the University of Florida last week? I mean, they freakin tasered him! He just didn’t agree w/ Kerry. I mean, his tuition & fees helped bring Kerry there, so he’s got a right to say what he wants. I think The Idea of Progress did a great post on it. Yes, he got carried away, & shoulda been removed b/c he was getting in the way of the others who also contributed & actually did want to hear what the Ker-ster had to say. But to TASER him; that’s just sickening. I’ve written about another tasering at a sunny school before too; & so y’all know I’m just pretty anti-tasering.

But the Columbia president paid Ahmadinejad to come to speak there, & then just bent him over & spanked him? If we’re going to taser anyone who is adamantly against whoever we pay to come speak at the school, shouldn’t that be consistent?

The kid paying tuition & fees gets tasered. The president who collects his income from the tuition & fees doesn’t. I’m not saying he shoulda got tasered. I’m saying the kid shouldn’t have.

I hate inconsistencies. Ahmadinejad saying he wants nothing to do w/ the US, then coming here to speak. Someone getting tasered for causing a scene at a lecture, & someone else being commended for it (even though he himself paid big money to the offender?). What’s up w/ all dat yo?!?!

Oh, yeah, & then Evo Morales spoke at Cooper Union on Monday, & said that capitalism is “the worst enemy of humanity”. He got thunderous applause from the 200 students that came to hear him speak. So, don’t tell me it has anything to do w/ denouncing our way of life. Maybe it’s just cause they’re such a hippie school.

Sidenote: don’t think I’m anti Evo, cause I’m not. I think it’s cool that a poor farmer w/ no “formal education” can become president. I put “formal education” in quotes not b/c I love quotes so much, but b/c I don’t think a person’s intelligence or common sense comes is relative to the level of his degree. There are so many ppl among us who may not have formal training, but may be smarter or more qualified than those with a doctoral degree. But that’s a post for another day. Or not (you know how lazy I can be about posting).

playas gonna play, & haters gonna hate

That’s just the way it is.

Here’s what James Black of Yahoo! Sports wrote:

Ugly uni alert: Apparently, there will be a weekly mention in this space of attire. Here’s hoping the references to hideous jerseys are kept to a minimum. A week after the Pittsburgh Steelers decided to take unis from three eras – bad, ugly and worse – and create a new look, their in-state rivals decided to upstage them. The Eagles rolled out a yellow and baby blue throwback ensemble so ugly that any further description won’t do justice. See for yourself.

I don’t know, I kinda like it. I mean, it’s supposed to be a tribute to what they used to have. Styles change. That doesn’t mean we can’t appreciate what came before. The ppl who played for their team before they came around used to wear those colors, & they’re just giving homage to that.

The only reason I even know about all this hating is b/c Mr. T is a huge Eagles fan. And I’m a big ole fashion fan. I also love wasting time online, & sooooo….

I’ve created this nifty slideshow using Flickr. And then I surfed the web until I found a way to embed it into my bl*g. Cause I’m cool like dat.

UPDATE: I thought the outfits were cute & colorful & happy-looking. Mr. T thought they were horrible.

do your pants hang low?

I’m sure all of you have heard about local governments across the nation banning the whole saggy pant trend that’s going around. Now, I’m all for going up to a kid with his (sorry, but they all seem to be boys) pants hanging low, smacking him upside the head, & telling him to pull his pants up.

But I don’t think any government should propose a law dictating what ppl can & can’t wear.

What if they found glitter offensive? It’s fine to not like a trend. I wasn’t crazy about the backwards overalls (a la Criss Cross); I don’t enjoy feathered teased hair. It doesn’t matter if you don’t like something, you can’t just ban it like that. That’s not the principle this nation is founded on.

See, if you could just go around fining & arresting ppl for whatever you don’t like (or is really wrong, but not illegal yet); I’d get fines out the wa-zoo for always ending sentences in prepositions.

Now… if they were to propose a voluntary task force of
… big men … who are dressed as women … who are also packin …
to go around & smack those boys w/ their pants hung low upside the head until they pull them up.

Well, I’d have no problem w/ that.

OH OH… WAIT… I just had a thought. What if maybe an evil genius scientist could also concoct a serum of some sort? So that when the big man in drag smacked the fashion-offending young lad, HE would then have something come over him. So that then, HE also felt compelled to dress as a woman (sans ‘packin’) & go around smacking others that were once like him upside the head TOO!

Or, is that going too far?

a call for more lazy protesting!

I think I may be supporting the wrong causes. I dragged myself out of bed this morn, & dragged myself in & outta the shower to get ready. As I got out & was getting ready, it hit me that I completely support the wrong causes in my life.

Look at John & Yoko… They supported causes that made them stay in bed ALL DAY LONG! Now, whatever type of cause wants you to rally like that, I can get behind. I could TOTALLY do that!

How come no one ever has rallies like that anymore?

I’ve mentioned here how I went to Kent State. Y’all know Kent State, right? You’ve heard of it in the song “(4 dead in) Ohio”. About when our government’s military force opened fire on their own kids. Yeah, & you wonder how I ended up so paranoid & cynical. I remember in college, we didn’t have classes on May 4th in remembrance of the Kent State shootings. There were tons of vigils, & musicians (nationally famous hippie musicians, & local hippie musicians) would come & play on Blanket Hill. We would hang out on the grass & listen to ppl sing or speak. There was this one guy on the May 4th Task Force that was also there in the shootings, & he would speak & re-tell his story every year.

But one year that clearly sticks out in my mind is the year we all spread out & laid on the entire expanse there. Hundreds of ppl came that year. Everyone met at Blanket Hill, & laid down on the hill (careful not to hurt the daffodils*), over the hill next to Taylor Hall, & partly in front of it.

Anyway, the point of this all was that I did attend a rally where ppl laid down on the grass on a temperate, beautiful sunny day surrounded by flowers, & just thought of the injustices that happen in the world. News crews were there to take pics, so the word could be spread. So, there’s proof positive that you can have a successful rally & be laying around.

I wish there were more things like that. Either that, or I need to go to bed earlier. But since I didn’t get to sleep until about 2 am last night, y’all get a big long rambling post b/c it takes me forever & a day to get to a point.

Assorted May 4th sites: official site of May 4th Task Force | may41970.com | may4.org (they have a great timeline of events) | FBI investigation | A million other links

*The pic is of Blanket Hill, the 2 granite structures are part of the May 4th memorial (they only built 7% of what was proposed), & the building in the back (that kinda reminds you of the Pantheon) is Taylor Hall. There are 58,175 daffodils planted on Blanket Hill; one for each of the US servicemen & servicewomen who died in the Vietnam conflict war. When I was in school there, I’d heard that you get fined $500 per daffodil that you picked b/c it’s technically defacing a memorial (or something like that). I never did find out if that was true, or just an urban legend; but I never did pick a single daffodil. I did pick the black-eyed susans that were in front of the Student Center all the time though.

jena conviction overturned

I know you guys all have the Jena situation alive in your heads. I’m sure you all were as pleased as I when we heard that the state appeals court overturned the felony conviction for Mychal Bell.

He was tried as an adult originally even though he was just 16 when the assault happened. I’m not sure what will happen next; that’ll be determined this week. Likely, he’ll be re-tried as a juvenile (which is what shoula happened in the 1st place). It’s not like re-trying him will cost more money in court/legal fees. Oh wait, yes it will.

It sucks that all this happened; & that it took so long for anything to happen. I think everyone who’s signed the petition (see previous post), & all the ppl who’ve traveled down there, or blogged about it, or even just brought it up & talked about it have helped bring about some change. It makes me re-affirm my faith in our ppl.

Here’s something I’m not too sure about… Maybe you’ve all heard that there’s going to be a rally in Jena, LA this coming Thursday. Expected numbers are anywhere from 5,000 to 35,000 ppl to attend.

One of those ppl is Al Sharpton. Y’all know Rev. Al, right? Here’s the thing, all the ppl on the side of the Jena 6 believe that Al’s coming to help them. But I believe that Al only does things that help HIMSELF. I don’t think he’s doing this (or has done anything else) out of the goodness of his own heart. I think he’s his own publicity machine. I think he only cares about what this situation can do for him.

There are thousands of others that are leaving their work behind & paying their own way to go to Jena. Rev. Al’s doing it as part of his work, & will def collect from it.

I guess it’s all whatever though. I mean, he will bring publicity to it all; he won’t be ignored, that’s for sure. So, I guess this situation can use all the ppl (self-serving or not) it can get.

ism-ing all over the place

If you are one of those ppl who say that you will only marry a member of your own race/ethnicity, does that make you racist? B/c you are closing yourself off of others simply based on race?

If so….

Then if you’re a female, & would only consider dating/marrying a male. Or, if you’re male & will only consider dating/marrying a female, does that make you sexist? B/c you’re completely not willing to open yourself up to the possibility simply based on the sex of the person?

I’m bloody finicky

You guys don’t know this about me, but I’m pretty picky. I like to call it “particular”. But basically, it can be seen as high-maintenance to some. But I’m even high-maintenance for myself. But I’ll do the extra work for myself to make things the way I like it, b/c I’ll enjoy it more that way.

Quick example? I like my Bloody Mary’s made from scratch. Yes, it means mixing up like 7 different ingredients, but it’s way better than any “mix”.

I’ve also had a rough last 2 days. Well, last 5 days really. But b/t yesterday & today at work, I seriously thought it had to be Thurs already, b/c I’ve already done so much.

And I emailed w/ my girls today, like I occasionally do. Whatever, don’t judge me, y’all email your friends while working too. And besides, it keeps me saner than otherwise. So, anyway, after my long, stressful day, I noticed that my bff had left a million comments on some pics I had online, & I emailed her to see if she’d done any work today at all. This is why I love my girl. Her response made me chuckle.I would also post some of the other emails that led up to this, b/c we’ve been emailing all day about absolutely nothing. I don’t think I’d ever post that stuff b/c it’s not really appropriate material for this blog. But I can tell you it involves TMZ, Channing Tatum, & Cristiano Ronaldo. Yeah. Oh, & telemundo.

But the point is that she’s right; it does ask if you’re all fussy & stuff at the bottom. And I have filled out tons of Yahoo surveys b/c I am fussy about all that stuff. And I’m a Yahoo-enthusiast & want to make sure they do things the way I like it.

Yeah, so I didn’t have a real post today (um, remember at the beginning when I told you how crazy busy I was?). But I did think it was funny that Yahoo decided to put that add at the bottom of my email to her.

seeing killers – missed opportunities

So, about 3 months ago, I was offered free tics to go see the Killers. I remember exactly when it was b/c it was the night before we drove down to C-bus for my sister’s commencement ceremony at OSU. I felt guilty about accepting the free tics, b/c I felt that I didn’t work for them or earn them in any way. Does that make sense?

So, anyway, they were in town Friday night, & Mr. T got to hang out with them for afterhours. They were down where Mr. T works after they finished up their show at the Wolstein Center to chill & hang out.

I normally go & hang out w/ Mr. T on Fridays, but this Friday, I was just too exhausted to do so. (I’d only gotten 2 hours of sleep the night before). It’s cool though, I mean what’s meant to be will be, right? I guess it just wasn’t meant for me to see any killers this year.

at a loss

You know how there are some ppl in this world that have a talent so profound, it just stops you? Like, you hear Pavarotti start singing, you can feel yourself gasp?

It’s been a year & 2 months since I posted about his pancreatic cancer. You can read all the posts I’ve written about him all together by clicking here. You don’t have to click to read the posts, but I am very fond of the pics I put up to accompany the posts. I picked out older photos of him that I thought showed a lot of who he was beyond a maestro.

So, there’s not much to say; I’m sure you all have heard by now that he’s passed on. Instead, I’m going to post a bunch of things he’s said over his 71 years.

  • Above all, I am an opera singer. This is how people will remember me.
  • Am I afraid of high notes? Of course I am afraid. What sane man is not?
  • At the age of 4. I jump on the table. I am a little tenor. And I begin to sing, La Donna e Mobile.
  • Children should be given the chance to play instruments, to sing.
  • Every Italian play football. The first gift they give you when you are 3 is a ball.
  • For me, music making is the most joyful activity possible, the most perfect expression of any emotion.
  • For an Italian, being honored in America was a big privilege.
  • I am open to everything.
  • I am proud to be a messenger of peace for the United Nations.
  • I haven’t seen the Elton John, but I have seen Rent on many occasions.
  • I made 12 duets. It was such a pleasure to know these people from the inside, not from the cover of an album.
  • I smoke cigar in the summertime. Probably in three months, 10 cigar.
  • I want to reach as many people as possible with the message of music, of wonderful opera.
  • I would like to raise money for the kids from the world. To do that, the only way, it was to call pop singer. If you call pop singer, you can sell the ticket.
  • If children are not introduced to music at an early age, I believe something fundamental is actually being taken from them.
  • If you see me once, you cannot confuse me with another.
  • If you want to do something really bad to me, you invite at your home, and put one record of mine. And my digestion will be finished before begin.
  • In opera, as with any performing art, to be in great demand and to command high fees you must be good of course, but you must also be famous. The two are different things.
  • Learning music by reading about it is like making love by mail.
  • People have a right to criticize.
  • Sometime to be called Pavarotti is not always an advantage.
  • Why should be elite, music? Excuse me. Music must be for everybody.
  • We just baptized my daughter, and we have 300 people in the church. When we are going to be married, we will be alone.
  • With the piano, at the age of 18, I was already singing for $1, $2 a performance.
  • You don’t need any brains to listen to music.
  • No regrets, no regrets.
  • If music is central to a person’s life, it can be something very special and life-affirming.
  • I am a very superstitious person.[When he performs, Pavarotti wants nails strewn all over the stage, and won't tolerate the color purple. In former times, priests wore purple, and artists couldn't perform during the season of Lent. So, purple, to an Italian, to an artist, means no eating, no money, no work, no women.]
  • Olive oil is so incredibly healthy — as a digestive. I love it and I use it despite the fact that it’s the most caloric thing in the world.
  • I am not a boiled potato — I am a fried potato.
  • I have lost twice 85 pounds. Can you imagine? Twice.
  • Despite the fact that I was born under the sign of Libra [balance], I am a person who calculates little and dreams a lot. With the grandissimi advantages and the grandissimi disadvantages. But, the advantages are 90% and the disadvantages, 10%. So it’s worth living as a dreamer.
  • I love Ballo [Un Ballo in Maschera -- The Masked Ball, a Verdi opera] for many reasons …. The tenor character Riccaredo is a good man who is deeply in love with his friend’s wife. I sympathize with him, not because I have ever been in love with a friend’s wife, thank God, but because I know how pwerful love can be and how it can make a man do things that he knows are wrong.
  • I know one second before if is not going well. Absolutely. I feel it.
  • Teaching I think is the most difficult thing. Teaching is more difficult than singing. ….. Why? Because you have to transfer a thought from your brain to the brain of the other person and the throat of the other person. [2005 - This was when Pavarotti announced that he was retiring from performing, & was now going to teach for free.] I’m going to teach for free. I don’t want to teach people just because they pay me. I want to teach people who really are good. I received a beautiful welcome to the world of music. I want to give something back to the younger generation.”

I don’t really have anything to post. Don’t have time either, as I’m pretty busy actually do tons of work.

So, I thought I’d pimp out Lifehacker. It’s a website that has tips & downloads to do just about anything.

I use my blog as a place to store bookmarks of places I like to visit that aren’t all necessarily other blogs. So, I have all those categories in my sidebar. You can click on each cat to expand it & see the links. I’ve got Lifehacker under ‘Resource Stuff’.
