Or, How the Cops killed Cindy Lou Who

I’ld like to say that I’m not one to harp on a subject, but I am. I know you guys have already seen this story about the NYPD firing 50 shots at 3 men?

The guy they killed was to get married that day in a few hours. They shot & wounded his 2 friends. One was shot 3 times & the other 11 times.

Now if all this doesn’t bother you enough, there’s more. The guy they shot 3 times; one of the shots went into his hand. Now, after shooting these guys, the one in his hand, they put handcuffs on these wounded guys as they were taking them to the emergency room of the hospital.

Ok, here’s the other thing. If I were of the position that I didn’t care what line the cops crossed to protect society. Which of course, you all already know that I think that a lot of ppl in authority tend to abuse their power. But say I thought that it’s totally ok for 5 of the 7 cops present to open fire & shoot off FIFTY bullets at 3 unarmed men. Say I thought that this is how all cops in all cities should be. Let that be a lesson to the criminals, right? Well, how about the fact that only 21 of the 50 bullets actually hit the car that the 3 unarmed guys were in?

I don’t know about y’all, but cars are pretty big, & I would think that if you give a dude a gun to protect me, then hopefully their aim would be a lil better than that. I mean seriously ppl. More than HALF of the bullets were then stray bullets that coulda hit lil Cindy-Lou-Who whose dad was dropping her off at her mom’s house after spending her weekend w/ daddy (since she’s from a broken home). Now, Cindy-Lou-Who (who is having a hard enough time after re-locating from Whoville, & now is trying to cope w/ the huge custody battle from the divorce) is now laying in a hospital bed fighting for her life cause she got hit from one of the bullets that the police (who were supposed to be protecting her) accidentally hit her w/.

ta-DA! I knew it!

Hey, guess what, folks?!

How many have your name?

I knew it! Well, actually, I didn’t. But I thought maybe.

Actually, I don’t really think this is true. This isn’t actually an accurate thingie, cause it said that their are zero ppl here in the US w/ my 1st name, but, HELLO, I’m someone in the US w/ my 1st name! Right?

Plus, I’ve met someone (a guy in Texas) who has my 1st name minus one character at the end. So, I’m sure there’s more out there.

mixed market

Dude, my girl just sent me this email about this site, Mixed Market.com. Apparently, if you shop (uh, like I breathe) at any of the stores they’re affiliated w/, a percentage (I think 20%?) goes to certain charities.

Netflix is one of the companies; & I know my ppl are huge NetFlix ppl. I shop through Amazon like once a week (lately once every two weeks); so I’ll be shoppin via MixedMarket for my books.

It’s super-simple too. Just bookmark Mixed Market.com then, whenever you wanna buy something, just click on the store name through that website. It re-directs you to Amazon, or whereever, but it knows that you came through Mixed Market, so it’ll donate a percentage of whatever you pay (the amount you pay wouldn’t change) to a charity.

Here’s a list of all the stores that are affiliated w/ ‘em.
Here’s a list of the charities they run to. At the site w/ all the charities, you can click on any charity to go directly to their website & learn a little more about it.

Kewl, huh? Thanks, Steph, for sharing & carin! Remember folks, only YOU can prevent forest fires!

where is the line?

Ok, so the police are there to protect us, I understand that. But who decides what’s considered an abuse of power. How far can they go to “protect” our society?

Like, is it cool for them to fire 41 shots at an unarmed dude who’s just walking home? Apparently, cause those 4 cops were acquitted of wrongdoing. [related article: transcript of CNN interview w/ Amadou Diallo's mother].

Have you guys seen this story? A kid at UCLA (who, mind you, was likely a punk, but in my experienced opinion most 15-24 year old guys are punks) was tasered repeatedly by the cops while practicing civil disobedience. He shoulda been arrested; I mean, rules are rules. He was at the library, & he knew that anyone there after 11 pm could at any point be told to show their id, & was required to do so or leave. He wouldn’t, so it was totally right for them to try to haul his punk-ass away. However, it wasn’t ok for them to repeatedly taser him, even after he said he would leave, & that he wasn’t fighting them. Especially not after they already had handcuffs on him.

It also wasn’t ok for them to offer to also shoot their taser guns at others in the crowd who were disturbed by the level of violence inflicted upon him though. According to Peter Eliasberg, an attorney for the ACLU of Southern Cali, “it’s illegal to threaten anyone who asks for a badge … that’s assault”. But that’s exactly what they did. There were bystanders all around who asked for the officers’ names & badge numbers, but the officers threated to taser them too.

Related Videos (via youtube, of course):
UCLA’s Daily Bruin tv newscast (2:17)
camera phone footage of incident (6:53)

That 2nd video is longer, but totally worth watching. The only word I can use to describe it is harrowing. It’s hard to watch, but I’d highly recommend watching it. I don’t mean to put down a “race-card” or whatev on this, but I’d especially recommend sending that 2nd video to anyone you know w/ a lil color to their skin. If ya know what I mean. It’s scary.

Kudos to that guy in the white t-shirt at the end of that footage. I know the cops were this close to arresting him too. Too many times, ppl see wrong happening, but don’t say anything. I applaud him for getting in there, & acknowledging that what was happening wasn’t right. Also, the fact remains that the cops kept telling him to “STAND UP!”, but it’s not that easy to stand up after having been tasered that many times.

I know these cops won’t have anything happen to them. Maybe a slap on the wrist. I know how these things work. It’s nice to dream though. Maybe one day, a police officer will actually be made responsible for something that involves police brutality, & isn’t money-related.

Cancer Info linkage

Ok, this is going to be a serious post. Cancer is this huge growing monster that seems to want to do whatever it wants. You hope & pray & follow whatever you’re supposed to do, but in the end, it does whatever it wants. I know it’s affected each & everyone of us; unfortunately by attaching itself to someone we love.

So, w/ all that in mind, I’m offering up linkage to refer to if you need questions answered, or just various information.

First up, is the button I’ve attached to my sidebar. It will take you to a place on the website of the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP). The button takes you to info for donating cord blood if you’re pregnant. I thought this was important b/c I know so many pregnant women who say that they were never told of this as an option.

If someone is diagnosed w/ leukemia, then a bone marrow or cord blood transplant would be a likely option for treatment. It’s the NMDP registry that they check for a potential match to save that person’s life. If you’re not pregnant, you can still sign up to join the NMDP registry as a potential donor.

In the days that I joined, it was $25 (tax-deductible; waived for minorities) & you gave 8 mL of yo blood to tissue-type. (It’s not blood type, it’s tissue-typing to find a match). Now-a-days, there’s no blood involved; they give you a swab, & you swab the inside of your mouth, put the swabs in an envelope & give it back. You can also contact your local NMDP donor center for more info. Once you join, you’re in it for life; which I think is a super-cool thing. That means that I do this one lil thing once, & I can live the rest of my life knowing that if there is anyone out there that I can help, the NMDP will contact me to let me know. Of course, you can also update your current contact info w/ the NMDP online, once you’re in the registry. As far as I know this happens to just be a US thing.

The NMDP site has plenty of info for those diagnosed, those just supporting, and for physicians. It’s a great resource site, & I’ve learned so much from it.

The button on my sidebar (also above left) specifically takes you to the section on their site where they mention cord blood donation. If you know anyone who’s expecting a baby, please email them that link. PLEASE. Seriously, it could save a life if you do so.

Cord blood donation is:
-completely safe (umbilical cord & placenta is typically discarded after birth; cord blood is collected after the baby is born)
-free
-confidential
-painless (bone marrow donors go through local anesthesia)
-easier to match (cord blood from an unrelated donor doesn’t require the precise tissue-type matching of bone marrow transplants; & rejection of placental cells is less severe).

Of course, the button on the bottom of my sidebar (to the left of this paragraph) is for the American Cancer Society (ACS). There, you can find info on Relay for Life and guides to quit smoking. There’s a cancer survivors network, stories of hope, info on early detection, and statistics. It’s also got the most awesome site for the Great American Smokeout. You can be an advocate, donate your time, participate in events that they have. We all want change to happen, but it’s necessary for us to be active in making it occur. We all need to do something.

You may also want to check out this link to the National Cancer Institute. This is an informative US governmental site that has comprehensive information on cancer. You can get info on any cancer, A-Z, here. Seriously, any question about cancer the disease itself, you can prob find an answer to here. The site is very clinical, but thorough & informative.

For more information on Blood Cancers, you can go to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The have a ton of info on treatments & clinical trials. They also have a live chat thingie, so you can chat online with someone about your questions or concerns. It seems to be a site that offers a lot of support. They have a question & answer section, discussion boards, & informational materials.

Lastly, here’s the link to the Pink for October ppl. As you may recall, I didn’t like any of the buttons they had, so I used their design elements & created one from what they had to offer. I guess over 1500 sites went pink last month; sites by men & women everywhere. I thought that was quite impressive & am linking it so that anyone who wants more info on them can go to the site. It really doesn’t have any real info on cancer itself; but I have read a couple of posts by survivors through the site.

One day, I hope to delete this post entirely, as there will come a day when there is no need for it.

If you actually read this far down, I know you’re deeply touched & you have known the sorrow & seen the bravery of someone of someone suffering from this horrible monster. I’ll take this moment to say that my cousin is running a half-marathon on December 3, 2006 for our nephew who’s amazing life was cut short at the age of 7. Next week, it will have been 1 year since he has passed. She is collecting donations (checks made out to: “The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society”) to raise funds for the research & great things they do. If you’d like to contribute, please send me an email (yllwdaisies [at] gmail.com), & I will get the mailing info for the check & details to you.

If anyone has any other links you think I should add, please just leave it in the comments, & I’ll update the post w/ the new linkage. Also, all pics are hyperlinked to the corresponding site.

goin green

Ok, I’m sorry. I do love pink. sometimes. Then, it gets to be too much. Plus, I’ve been a bit stressed lately & stuff. So, I went green. I may go pink again next year for October. We’ll see what happens.

But I thought I’d talk about the color green for a bit. Now, I’m not an expert on color therapy, but I do believe in it & that it works, like music therapy. I’m sure you can find tons of websites on it.

What I do know is that green is a soothing color. It is a de-stresser. In my job, there are times that I have to send email messages that ppl don’t want to hear. When I started, & I had sent these messages, the ppl got upset, & I’m not trying to upset them, I’m just trying to tell them what’s what, but it’s not what they want. Anyway, I just changed the color of my fonts in those emails to green, & they didn’t get as upset. Or, maybe I just didn’t notice it as much. Whatev. I felt better about me, that’s what counts. I didn’t feel like I was making ppl cry (which is what I was told I was doing before).

So, I’m stressed, & I’ve gone green.

In other news, I’m adding a button I’ve created to the left. I’m going to do a whole separate post about it b/c it really deserves it’s own post, & I’ll be able to add a permalink to that post below it.

In other news, GA is on tonight, & I still haven’t had a chance to watch last week’s epi. So, it looks like I’ll be watching 2 hours of Grey’s this weekend.

a rose by any other name….

Ok, so the artist formerly known as Cat Stevens was a man previously known as Steven Georgiou, & eventually called himself ‘Yusuf Islam’, has released an album where he is simply going by ‘Yusuf’. Is he pulling a Madonna (or Cher)?

I’m all for ppl changing their minds. I know I’ll change my mind a million times, & then back to the original thought at the last sec. But I don’t do so in a way to confuse ppl. Even when he changed his name when he converted to Islam, I still called him ‘Cat Stevens’. So, I think I’m gonna continue to do so.

Even when Prince went to ‘the Artist’, I still called him ‘Prince’. He was always & has always been Prince to me. So, I’m gonna keep callin him Cat Stevens. Not ‘Cat’. The full name, Cat Stevens.

This reminds me of a story of a boy I met in my college days. Wanna hear? Ok.

So, my bff & I met this dude at a party, & (we swear) we were introduced to him as ‘Bob’. We met him at a party, & maybe it was the noise/music/medley of tonix*/whatev; but we thought his name was Bob. So, we continued to call him Bob for the next 6-8 years. I don’t know how long exactly, but a long time. We still see & talk to him. My bff is still good friends with him. Point is, a few years ago (3-4, again time can be hazy), he told us that his name was not Bob, but really Rob. He had always answered to Bob, b/c it didn’t bother him, but now he’s decided to let us know. So, for the next 2 years after finding out his real name, we (or mostly I) called him ‘Bob-Rob’, or alternatively ‘Rob-Bob’.

*tonix is a word made-up by moi. It’s a combination of tonics & toxics. It can apply to anything, & only I & others that may have been present at the time may know what it applied to in any given instance.

whoa! Riley’s got a point!

NO WAY! I can’t believe Riley actually made some sense here. He’s not the deep thinker out of the two brothers. This whole video game controversy is completely out of control.
I live in a nice neighborhood; & the moms I hear on the local news, & on the radio calling in everytime a new game is released. It drives me mad, b/c if you don’t want your son to play it, DON’T BUY IT. Ppl, control your children! Don’t have a hissy fit, & waste programming time to complain about something that is completely under your control.

Movies that are ‘rated R’ are restricted to 17 & up, right? Well, the games have ratings on them too. Teach your kids to respect you. If you say no to something, that means no. I don’t understand what the prob is. I’m sick of kids running rampant.

Also, I’m sick of the moms calling in & complaining about the video games being so violent; when I know the kids in her neighborhood do a ton of drugs. Seriously, ppl, get your priorities straight. She’ll call in, & say she’s from so & so neighborhood; a well-to-do neighborhood where the kids raid their parents medicine cabinets & have pharming parties.

Have y’all heard of the pharming parties? The kids have a party at someone’s house. Everyone invited brings their own prescription drugs, & their parent’s prescriptions, sometimes their grandparents if they get a chance to raid their medi-cabinet too. At the party, there’s a huge empty ‘punch bowl’ on the coffee table in the living room. Everyone empties their drugs into this. As you walk by it, you just pick up a pill or two & pop it. No one knows what they’re taking. They just take it, combine it w/ whatev else, & wait to see what happens.

Anyway, I think many other things are more important than complaining about video games, that have a rating on them anyway. God forbid parents actually have to talk to their kids & get to know them as human beings. Geez ppl, get to know your kids & find out who their friends are. Find out which friends are the punks (b/c we all know there’s gonna be some punks). You can’t choose their friends or tell them which ones they can’t be friends w/, but you can talk to them have an influence in their lives. Ya hear?

my fantasy football dilemma

Ok, so I’ve been teasin y’all w/ my fantasy football post. It’s not so much a post as it is a question. One of my daily blog-reads was offering expert advice to anyone who had a fantasy football question. Since I’m new to the whole concept of fantasy football (uh, or any football for that matter), of course I have a ton of questions.

Here is my fantasy football question. This question is now OPEN to all responses & any advice. I’d appreciate your input on my fantasy football problem. This is a real email I’ve really sent to someone trying to get help. And I got NO response. hmpf!

Dear Football Expert,
I’ve got Ricky Williams on my fantasy football team, & he swore to me he wasn’t gonna smoke pot during the season anymore. But I suspect he’s still gettin high.

I’ve confronted him about it, but he says that this doesn’t count cause it’s fantasy football, & they don’t have the same strict drug rules there. I don’t know that much about the regulations, so I don’t know if he’s just making that up! And then, he tried to make a pass at my mom! I just can’t control him & want to get rid of him, but he’s signed an ironclad contract. My only out is if I trade him for T.O., but hell hasn’t frozen over yet, so I can’t.

Please HELP!!!
Respectfully yours,
yllw.

I have no idea why I got no response. I thought that was very unprofessional to offer fantasy football advice, then not respond when asked a question.

re-focus

Ok, I haven’t been posting b/c I’ve been so incredibly stressed out. I can’t even tell you what’s been going on. Real life can be way stranger than fiction. Everything in my life (literally every aspect of my life: work, home, personal friendships, love, family) has been turned upside down.

To try to take my mind off of things, I’ve spent this evening reading blogs. I’ve known this wonderful, beautiful girl for the last 3 years, & although I’ve known she had a blog, I was just waiting for her to share it w/ me for whenever she was ready. She’s now leaving the country to go to Africa for the next 2 months. Why? B/c her heart is big enough to give of herself to ppl everywhere who may need someone to help. That did help me feel better about the world. All is not lost.

Debbie says that her friend Kevin’s doing better. You guys, you won’t even believe what happened to him. He was walking down the street & got mugged. They beat him & beat him. Even as he went into unconsciousness, they beat him. He has been in a coma for the last few days. He woke from his coma today. That’s a step. It’s gonna be baby steps, but I hope he takes back his life.

Then, I went to Lozo’s blog. My heart felt the pain he’s going through w/ his mother. It’s hard to not be accepted by someone so close to you. But then, of course, I read a little further down, & read this post. It cracked me UP. But then at the end, he talked about fantasy football. His exact words were, “if you want to avoid burning the roof of your mouth, don’t try to eat any of my fantasy football teams because they are super hot.

This reminded me that I forgot to share my fantasy football question. So, here it be. (uh, my next post that is).
