girls rock!

I work w/ musicians, which is really cool. I’m surrounded by incredible music all day long, & I love it. Although I do get frustrated (mainly w/ attitudes) in January & February; and I’m just super-busy & have no time at all in the month of December. But sometimes, little successes make up for all that.

Most of the gigs that ppl get are just things they do b/c it’ll pay the bills. Like playing for someone like Josh Grobin or the TSO (Trans-Siberian Orchestra). It’s not something you turn down, b/c they pay really well; & at least you can add it to your résumé.

But one of my girls is going to play in the Pepsi Smash thing for the Superbowl. Now, I don’t really do football, but I do know the Superbowl’s supposedly a big deal. And I’ve seen these Pepsi Smash shows before. I guess she’s gonna play w/ Kanye & Train; which is a really great opportunity for her. I’m just really excited for her & I can’t hold it to myself!

male-oriented last names

I’ve been having a ton of just random thoughts that have just been popping into my head. The latest in this series is when ppl have 3 first names. You know like David Patrick James*, or something like that. Also, I’ve heard that you should never trust anyone w/ 3 first names, but that’s so not true.

Anyway, what I’ve noticed is when these ppl have first-names for their last-name (or sur-name, family name, whatever), they are usually male names. How weird is that? Like James, Thomas, Murphy, Nicholas, Franklin, Edwards (well, it’s Edward w/ an ‘s’, so it counts), Davis, Riley, Aaron, Jacobs (same as the Edwards), Arnold, Gordon, and Martin. And those are just the last names I’ve encountered today in the last few hours!

A complete side-note. I heard that in Iceland, they add ‘daughter’ or ‘son’ to the last name of the children depending on their gender. This may explain Peterson, which is just Peter w/ a son at the end. So, I think this counts in what I was talking about w/ the last names being male first names too (as opposed to female first names). I mean, I’m sure there are female first names for ppl’s last names too, but they’re just not as prevalent.

Oh, and in the Russian states (ex-Russian states, whatever), they usually add an ‘a’ to the end of the female’s last name, & the guy’s name just wouldn’t have the ‘a’. I think that practice is pretty cool, so I thought I’d mention it. I don’t want to mention examples of those names, b/c I don’t want to put the last names of those ppl that I know “out there”.

*this is a totally made-up name. If you happen to know someone by this name, it is a complete coincidence.

a woman’s worth

This morning, we mourn the passing of Coretta Scott King, a true lady in every respect. They just don’t make women like her anymore. The only consolation is that she had passed in her sleep. It’s difficult to fight for an ideology that you believe to be right, and to stand by someone’s side through it all. Esp. when the means to an end is through civil disobedience; peace & brotherhood.

Everyone else uses what’s in their hands; the “speak softly, & carry a big stick” method (only w/out the “speak softly” part). It’s commendable (for lack of a better word), the faith that she had in life, her fellow ppl, religion, & her man. I hope that we as a society don’t just pay tribute to her today (or this week, or during Feb), and then go back to our lives forgetting her.

I’ve put up one of my fave pics of her. It’s not a pic that comes close to what she’s helped to do or anything. It’s just a pic of a woman who loves a man, and stood by him. “They” say behind every great man, there’s a great woman. I’m not gonna argue on this one.

It’s hard to go one when you lose someone; but she had the determination to carry on her husband’s dream.

the whiskey hounds

I went to school at Kent State; and when I was there, I worked at Ray’s. This was probably the best job I’ve ever had b/c I loved all the ppl there, everyone was like family. Charlie owned the place, & he was just the most fair & compassionate person. Anyway, I quit in 1999, b/c I was going to move soon after. Around the time that I quit working there, this guy Freddy Hill started.

Now, this part’s the vague memory . . . He either started just before I quit but we never worked together, or he started just after I quit & so we never worked together. I think it was the latter. Anyway, I still hung out there on the regular. So, mutual friends introduced me to him at some point in time, and I went to go see him play once (possible twice; once again-vague memory). But I didn’t really know him, & we never hung out so that we would get to know each other & become friends or anything.

So, the other day, my friend tells me that Freddy Hill’s band is playing Friday night. I had this recollection of him, & so I thought I’d go. Also, I’d always try to support any of my former Ray’s ppls.

Then, I really started to get keen on the idea of getting to see them play. I get there & Freddy does look vaguely familiar. He looks very different now then what I remembered him to look like (he’s all grown now, w/ facial hair & stuff). But then I realized that I’ve actually seen them play about 3 (maybe 4) times in the last 4 years! I just never realized that it was Freddy’s band that I had gone to see. I just liked them & their music, I never paid much attention to who they were themselves. I know that doesn’t sound nice, but I can be a little self-involved sometimes. I’m ok w/ it.

So, I’d like to plug their band, The Whiskey Hounds. Go to their website, listen to their music, and enjoy life.

good hair day

I had an appointment to get my hairs all cut (well, a 1/2 trim anyway) earlier tonight. I bailed though. I couldn’t do it cause I’m having a really great hair-day today.

I mean, really really great hair-day. Where your hair just happens to do what you always wish it would do normally. So, you spend extra time trying to make it do that? Well, I didn’t even today. It just happened. It literally fell where it was supposed to. No hair-drying or anything.

So, I’m taking it as a sign not to mess with it. Thought I’d share. Have a good night, be safe.

i miss the cure

You know how you do things & sometimes just have the tv on, but you’re not really watching it? Well, I had it on, and all of a sudden, I heard what sounded like the beginning of “Fascination Street” by the Cure. Then, they showed a Ford Explorer, and then it led into some other music.

But the 1st four chords were definitely Fascination Street. I haven’t heard the Cure in such a long time, and I really miss their music. Every single one of their albums were incredible & you could put them one & listen to them straight through. And all their albums had like a million songs on them too, and were over an hour long. That’s just plain good value.

how much is your dignity worth to ya?

Driving home yesterday, there was one of those advertisements on the radio for an upcoming event at one of the clubs. There’s this club, Moda, here in Cleveland. It was kinda a big-deal when it 1st opened. Like, they would charge $10 to $20 cover just to get in, depending on who was dj-ing that night. And it was $200 for a VIP table (for 6) w/ a bottle of champagne. You get the point. I haven’t been there in over 2 years (I can’t believe how long it’s been!), they’ve changed a bit since they 1st opened.

I’ve been kinda lucky to never actually have to pay to get in there. I used to go there whenever dj Kramer (this dj from San Francisco) was spinning there. He always played great stuff & he was a nice guy. Although, most djs I’ve met are pretty nice ppl, & a lot of them are shy (weird, huh?).

Anyway, back to the radio advertisement. They were offering 5 bucks to the wildest girl in there next Wed night. So, some girl’s gotta go in there, probably dressed pretty nautilicious, and act a fool for 5 bucks!

It’s not that they’re only going to give this chick 5 bucks (well, it is a bit of that). But that they’re sooo confident that Cleveland’s got so many girls w/ low self-esteem, that they can pack the club w/ these fine (but vulnerable) women. And that’s kinda sad.

my linguistic profile

I saw this at celeboganda, and thought it was really interesting. I’ve always wondered about the way I talk, and how it can be classified. Mainly cause English is really my 2nd language.

So, here’s mine:

Your Linguistic Profile:

75% General American English
15% Yankee
5% Dixie
5% Midwestern
0% Upper Midwestern

I don’t know where the 5% dixie came from. I think it’s b/c I pronounce aunt the right way (not like “ant”). It’s anyone’s guess though. Go do yours. I can’t wait for someone from PA to do it.

resolutions

I know, I’m still on this New Year subject. But, you know how ppl make resolutions every year, but then most ppl don’t really follow through on them? Well, last year, I only made one New Year’s resolution. I usually don’t do the whole resolution thing, b/c I don’t like to force myself into doing things I wouldn’t normally do. I think I deserve better. That’s all beside the point.

Last Friday (I’m setting the scene here), I was out w/ one of my dearest friends. We’ll call her ‘Steph’. We went to go see/hear this band play, and after seeing the band but en route to our next venue, we were talking about assorted stuff. Anyway, somehow we got onto this topic about the resolutions. And I said that last year I only made one resolution, and I wasn’t able to keep it. I had decided that I was going to bring back “yo”, the word, in common language. I totally thought it was do-able (especially if you had any idea to the quantity of ppl I talk to on a daily basis). That was when she said how crazy that was, b/c her resolution last year was to bring back the word “righteous”. (Can you not see how we are such great friends?)

Well, neither of us were successful in our resolutions last year. But maybe we’ll carry them onward into this year. You know, “if at 1st you don’t succeed” & all that. We did end up using those words much more for the rest of that night.

Oh, and when I said I wanted to bring back “yo”; I meant at the end of sentences, not at the beginning. Ex.: “I’ll meet you at whatever place at 9pm, yo.” Or, “This is the best sandwich I’ve had in forever, yo.” Alternatively, you can also use the letters “y-o” instead of the word. Just don’t think about it too much, or put to much emphasis on it. Just let it be, and let it flow w/ the natural sentiment. ‘Kay? Have fun.
